Grace Williams wrote this short elegiac piece in 1958 for her friend the pianist and composer Eiluned Davies, who had temporarily lost the use of her right hand as the result of an accident. It has remained in manuscript until the present time, and there can be little doubt that had it been published the composer would have devised a more suitable name than the bald description “Piece for the Left hand” which is pencilled on the score. By agreement with the composer’s family, the editorial title Saraband for Eiluned has been adopted.
